Great Barford visits Wöllstein
On Thursday 21 May a coach was seen in High Street Great Barford around 19.00 being loaded for a 600 mile journey. This was the start of the twinning weekend for the members of the Great Barford Partnership, The coach arrived in Wöllstein Germany at 11.00 where it was met by our hosts. Some members had flown from Stansted to Hann and others had driven over and were extending their stay with their hosts. A total of 31 members made the journey. Some of the members have visited the same family for many years and have seen their children grow into adults who now have children of their own, many of our hosts are seen as part of our own extended family.

This was the 31st twinning, of the 2 villages and on Saturday evening it was celebrated by everyone with a 3 course dinner, music and dancing in the Village Hall.
Sunday was a free day spent with our host who had each made their own arrangements to entertain us in one way or another. On Monday morning coaches left Wöllstein for the town of Cochem, this is a medieval town set on the banks of the River Mosel, an excellent wine growing area. The town is dominated by a 13th century castle which stands on a hill overlooking the town and river. |
During the day we were entertained with a meal at one of the many restaurants and a cruise along the Mosel. We returned to Wöllstein and in the evening we had games in the Village Hall, Skittles, Darts and Carpet Bowls. These games are played each year to take the place of the football match which used to be played when the members of both sides were much younger. As with all things they must come to an end. It was with tears and great sadness that on Tuesday morning at 09.00 the members said goodbye to our hosts until they meet again in Great Barford in 2010.
